The Rally crosses a lot of the territory which the Dakar used to do before its move to Sounth America and the finish line was in the Gambia this year rather than Bamako in Mali. Banjul, the capital of The Gambia, situated on the Atlantic coast, is some 300km south of Dakar in Senegal which they pass through on route.
